Brough or Brough-on-Humber, is a residential area in the common ward of Elloughton-cum-Brough in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. The town has a populace of around 7,000. The town was known as Petuaria amid the Roman period, and served as the capital of the Celtic tribe of the Parisi. Petuaria denoted the southern end of the Roman street referred to now as Cade's Road which ran generally northwards for a hundred miles to Pons Aelius (current Newcastle upon Tyne). Brough was made a town by the Archbishop of York in 1239, allowed the same freedoms as Beverley. On the other hand, there is no record of these freedoms having been utilized, and the settlement worked as a town for some further hundreds of years.
